igi The NLCS is an annual series of matchups featuring the National League's best teams in a winner-take-all format. As of the 2019 season, the NLCS will be contested in best-of-seven series, using the ALCS as a Division series. The two best teams in each division advance to play in the division championship series. The division winners play in the Wild Card Game, a single elimination game that is played on the day after the World Series Game 5 (as per the World Series schedule). The two Wild Card games are played on the same day, with the winners of those games advancing to play in the one-game Wild Card Game. In the event of a tie in the Wild Card Game, the higher seeded team is allowed to select their schedule from among the two tiebreakers. (Any of the five best-of-seven NLCS matchups may take place over the course of multiple weeks.) If there is still a tie after all that, one playoff team will be eliminated and the next team in line will play in the Wild Card Game. Home field advantage in the one-game Wild Card Game goes to the team that won the previous best-of-five divisional series. If the same two teams are in the same division, home field advantage alternates between the two teams each year. If both Wild Card teams are in the same division, home field advantage goes to the team with the better regular-season record. The use of wild cards was originally suggested by former commissioner Bowie Kuhn and implemented for the first time in 1996, when the NLCS had a one-game Wild Card Game. From 2011-12, the AL and NL teams each had a Wild Card Game that was an elimination game. That format was replaced by the wild card format in 2013, and from 2013-16, the Wild Card Game was also a single elimination game. The AL Wild Card Game was previously held on the third-to-last day of the season, which provided a bye for the postseason. Beginning in 2016, the Wild Card Game was moved to the Wednesday following the NLCS. The wild card format was first used in the postseason for the AL (1980), NL (1982) and NL West (2012). The NLCS has generally been much tighter than the ALCS, with only four teams advancing to the World Series (1988, 2004, 2016, 2018) since the wild card was implemented.
