BIFMA X5.4-2020 Standard for Seating in Public Spaces Recently Approved by ANSI

The Business Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) X5.4-2020 standard is the first of three furniture standards under review to be approved by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI). As a result, products must be tested to the new requirements at your earliest convenience.

On May 20, 2020, BIFMA announced that ANSI recently approved the revised safety and performance standard for ANSI/BIFMA X5.4-2020, Public and Lounge Seating. The furniture manufacturers of seating are required to test their products according to the new safety requirements starting at their earliest convenience.

In response to market need, the BIFMA Subcommittee for Seating Standards and furniture industry stakeholders has expanded the scope of the 2020 version of the standard to include recliners, patient seating, stools and restaurant/dining/cafeteria seating. The updated public and lounge seating standard was also harmonized with some of the tests from BIFMA’s general-purpose seating standard, ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017 Office Chairs.

The X5.4-2020 standard defines the specific tests, laboratory equipment, conditions of test and recommended minimum levels to be used in the testing and evaluation of the safety, durability and structural adequacy of public and lounge seating products.

Leading office furniture manufacturers have already started to implement the standard to demonstrate the performance and quality of their products.
