The latest versions of EN 12983-1 and EN 12983-2 were published in February 2023¹. These documents supersede EN 12983-1: 2000 with amendment/corrigendum and CEN/TS 12983-2: 2005 respectively¹. They specify safety and performance requirements for items of cookware for domestic use on top of a stove, cooker or hob². They are applicable to all cookware regardless of material or method of manufacture². They shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by August 2023¹.
The main changes compared to the previous edition as below:
EN 12983-1: 2023
l Adds the handle pull test in the original.
l Adds non-stick coating performance test, including corrosion resistance test.
l Adds heat distribution test.
l Adds and revised the applicability test of multiple heat sources.
EN 12983-2:2023
l Removes the handle pull test, the test for heat resistance of furniture, the durability test for non-stick coating, corrosion resistance test for non-stick coating, the heat distribution test and the applicability test for various heat sources. (Required in EN 12983-1:2023)
l Adds performance requirement of easy-to-clean coatings, if mentioned
l Adds impact resistance of rim and any attached handles.
l Updates the performance requirements of non-stick coatings.
l Updates the thermal shock endurance requirements of the body and lid.
