What Is EN 1022:2023?

EN 1022:2023, titled “Furniture. Seating. Determination of Stability,” sets the benchmark for assessing the stability of various seating types. Whether it’s your favorite armchair, a sleek office chair, or a cozy sofa, this standard ensures that your seating experience remains secure and wobble-free.

Key Highlights of the Update:

Expanded Scope: EN 1022:2023 now covers all types of seating for adults, regardless of their use, materials, design, or manufacturing process. From plush recliners to minimalist stools, this standard has got you covered.

Weighty Matters: The stability tests consider adults weighing up to 110 kg (approximately 243 lbs). So, whether you’re a lightweight or a heavyweight, your seat stability is in safe hands.

Adaptable Testing: The test methods described in EN 1022:2023 can be tweaked for seating designed for children or heavier adults. It’s all about versatility!

Exclusions: Children’s highchairs, table-mounted chairs, and bath seats have their own European Standards and are not part of EN 1022:2023. Safety first, little ones!

How Does It Work?

The stability assessment involves rigorous testing, ensuring that your favorite chair won’t wobble like a tipsy penguin. Engineers and designers put seating through its paces, considering factors like load distribution, tipping angles, and structural integrity.

What’s Next?

The standard has completed its journey through the development process, including proposal, drafting, public comments, and approval. On December 8, 2023, EN 1022:2023 officially stepped into the limelight, ready to revolutionize the world of seating.
